the filmmakers behind the new update of the 1981 clash of the titans may have had the best intentions of bringing the classic to life for a new audience. unfortunately, those intentions are lost amidst a muddled mess of an action film that drains all the fun and excitement out in favor of an overdone and needlessly hacked-up story and drab, joyless characterizations. louis leterrier lays the film to waste with confusing action scenes and mediocre cgi monsters, and the performances by the entire cast are tolerable at best and flat-out bad at worst. certainly there is a good movie hidden in there somewhere, but the filmmakers bury any chances of it coming out thanks to clumsy editing, scores of expendable characters and recycled plot elements and themes from better sword-wielding epic films in recent memory. in the end clash of the titans fails by taking itself far too seriously and trying to be something far greater than those involved in its creation are capable of, making it yet another hollywood big-budget remake that doesn't hold a candle to the original…or to many other films of its particular sword-and-sandals genre.
