very different kind of jackie chan movie than i've been used to seeing. grim, bloody, and violent in a nihilistic way. yeah he still does some stunts, but you actually feel like he could die or get badly hurt at any moment where he usually comes across as superhuman. i didn't mind, though. even if seeing jackie billed brings some expectations to the table, i definitely don't need all of these to be the same and it was interesting how there was zero room for joking around here. great stuff, more people should watch it!! read more

crime story is a cop thriller more than an action movie, and unlike usual chan fare it is dead serious from beginning to end. i think this works both for and against the film. it trades in chan's trademark humor and elaborate action scenes for heavier dramatics and a grounded tone. without his trademark sense of identity about the film, it feels less unique. less special and less distinctly his. it honestly could've been any actor in chan's part. there's nothing about his character that demands it be played by jackie chan™, which i think he was eager for as it was a chance to show off his... read more
