film #2 of hooptober part vii: the new blood hammer horror and universal horror: it's the ultimate debate of classic horror monster franchises. i love both, but my childhood was dedicated to universal thanks to the crestwood house monster series. and by most measures, it's universals's the mummy which tops hammer's. that's not to say that the 1959 film is bad many any measure; far from it. the cast is impeccable, led by the always-stellar christopher lee and peter cushing. the direction is just a touch edgier, more willing to lean into horror than the films back in hollywood two decades read more
