there is a phoenix perched atop of a tree stump in the beginning of the movie, with his nest on the floor of this mental asylum. the phoenix is deeply traumatised, with his pair of wings that will soon belong to his mother.
first venture into jodorowsky, santa sangre is straightforward at first and slowly devolved into a surreal hallucinatory nightmare, a circus of perverse tale of horrors in the disguise of a tale of murders.
fenixs parents are overbearing, his father, orgo is an adulterous circus knife-thrower and a cowboy hypnotist while his mother, concha is an overzealous trapeze artist. as a young child, fenix was then locked inside a trailer and witnessed the gruesome lovers spat. the influences of his parents carried over from his childhood to his adulthood, his self-identity strongly built around these influences and his only way to rebuild himself is to be invisible, or be guided by alma, his childhood darling.
almost every characters presented in santa sangre is irreversibly flawed, the band of misfits, castaways and the unloved. there is one scene where a group of people with down syndrome get exposed to coke snorting and prostitute groping scene instead of watching a movie about robinson cruse on their field trip. it was bizarre and absurd to see these dark corners of humanity exposed so leisurely to the audiences. take the grand funeral scene as another example too, a grandeur send off to fenixs elephant before seeing it torn apart by the poverty-stricken folks.
santa sangre is obsessed with its religious symbolism, the parallel painted between the relationship of felix and his mother and the zealous concha with her church, a pool filled with holy blood. or paint, i guess grape wine is too expensive in such large volume. with the giallo-like violence and the surrealism that distort the reality of the movie, santa sangre is a fun, engaging and ultimately thought-provoking watch.
