i'm giving this 2*s because i recognize the quality of the production, although personally i despised the film and it's a 0-star movie for my tastes. a clear knock-off of "it's a wonderful life" (made the previous year), this movie was a popular piece of trash for all the reasons the other film was an unpopular gem of cinema.
the basic plot is that cary grant plays an angel who comes to earth to help a bishop by seducing his wife. no lie. the initial conflict of the story appears to be that the bishop can't get his shiny new cathedral built as quickly as he wants unless he agrees to name it for a rich lady's dead husband. boo hoo. but lest you think these pretty, white, upper-class christians don't have any real problems, ~lo!, there's a deeper conflict! the bishop's wife is not as happy as she used to be because he is very successful and busy and doesn't have the time to take her out to lunch at that french restaurant or buy her new hats. she has to have the servants make it at home or buy things on her own. oh no! their marriage is doomed!
if you've ever prayed to the very traditional white-bearded old man capital g.o.d. for a handsome angel to come swoop in and solve all your problems for you, then this is exactly the kind of wish-fulfillment movie you might get a kick out of. whereas in "it's a wonderful life", the film takes its time to show you that problems aren't so easy to fix and that everything causes chain reactions, this film has magical ice-skating. whereas iawl gradually illustrates that there's no such thing as a perfect life and we should appreciate how lucky we already are, this film has an angel using his powers for such important things as refilling sherry bottles and miraculously filing notecards. it's the kind of christmas pap that gets unleashed in a torrent every time around this year, relying on the charm of its stars to provide a bit of vapid escapism.
essentially, this film is a disney cartoon brought to life. the servants are caricatures of helpfulness and devotion, the bad people are cartoonishly selfish, the good people bat their eyes a lot and are completely naïve. it's the kind of film that if you have an ounce of cynicism in your body, will likely make you roll your eyes and dry-heave at the entitlement and obliviousness on display throughout. these days, this would be made by one of those faith-based production companies that b-rate "stars" like kevin sorbo and dean cain work with. but this was 1947, so that was just the mainstream. you could make a christian film that didn't actually engage with spirituality in any meaningful way, where nobody really grows, and instead it's an excuse to have a magical love triangle. but it's okay because with one wave of a hand, the whole thing can be forgotten as if it never happened. a christmas miracle!
