Review of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

I hate when people call the black panther movies a win for black people. I hate that they say that when there are African filmmakers, making films in several countries in Africa showcasing different aspects of that culture, some of which I'm sure are high quality films. The Black Panther movies are hollywood movies, made by a large media conglomerate who've made their live action Mulan movie in China supported by locations where Uighur Muslims are in internment camps, not to mention the main lead of the movie being in support of the police brutality against Hong Kong. These films use sound stages and green screens with no real locations showing the beauty of any African nation and yet they are somehow viewed as a win for that culture. If you really cared about this, then support African made films, watch them, popularize them, make them bigger than they are, support people who actually care about showcasing the culture and having films revolving around it rather than films that use it as a cosmetic feature. "Wins" for the media industry should not be decided by Hollywood. Hollywood films are not the only valid ones and they should not be seen as such. Validation of culture and life should not be determined by whether or not Hollywood has taken notice, you should instead support films that are made by people from those cultures who want to showcase it and spread it but they get subjucated by the existence of Hollywood and are deemed lesser than for being lower budget, more quaint and personal films.

Enough about that rant, let me actually talk about the film. Have mixed feelings on that one. I dislike the justification for Wakanda being continually separated from the rest of the world, undoing what the first Black Panther's entire point and message was about sharing wealth and resources to ensure prosperity. Not only that but the technology existing to recreate the plants destroyed by Killmonger in the first movie is ridiculous since it would imply that after he was defeated, they did not try to recreate it until T'Challa's death when they would probably be very invested in assuring they have Black Panther as a symbol amd protector of their nation indefinitely. This film literally just back pedals on the first film a lot and I really dislike that. Shuri's emotional journey through this is fairly good and interesting and I like where the film goes in that regard as I believe it to be well done. Namor as a villain is pretty decent though I feel like there's a problem I have with him and the idea behind his character and what he wants to achieve that I can't quite put my finger on. I suppose that I find it a bit ridiculous that he wanted to destory the entirety of the surface world to preserve the peace of his own nation but that's not quite the problem I have, something I'll have to think more about. Ridiculous to say that Riri Williams made her first machine at 3 years old, that is near impossible to buy into, would've made much more sense if they said like 8, 7 or even 6. But 3 just sounds absolutely stupid to me. Of course, most visual effects relating to any form of power suit, fight scene and sometimes the ocean don't look good but we all know at this point that is the result of Disney making their films assembly line products, treating their VFX teams poorly and barely giving them the time they need to complete projects or the time they need in between projects. Yeah, that's pretty much all I have to say and also I do hate that they call Ross a colonizer and refer to white people as colonizers in general. Always bothered me since the first film. I really thought the length of this film would be a big issue for me but I thought it was paced fairly well and I didn't really feel the length much but I do think it should've been shortened as I was really starting to feel the length in the last 20-30 minutes. My main issue with the film is that they came to the conclusion that it is better for Wakanda not to share their resources and to hoard them along with their wealth which absolutely can be shared and there could be consequences to that, sure but it is still what should have happened and I really don't like that they undid that decision from the first movie. Also, while I appreciate this movie having much less comic relief than most Marvel films, the use of it here is usually ineffective or inappropriate, at least in my eyes, especially in very serious situations which I'm just tired of seeing happen over and over again.

Rating Scale

10 - Flaws are so unnoticeable or so minuscule that they can easily be ignored or unseen, AND I love it so much that the flaws are irrelevant to me.

9 - Great emotional resonance with me but had flaws I cannot ignore or didn't leave me with much in terms of narrative/themes/food for thought; OR I can appreciate it as excellent from a critical standpoint but didn't have as strong an emotional resonance with it.

8 - Stands out from a critical standpoint but barely had an impact on me personally; OR resonated with me emotionally but not too strongly/ made me happy but certainly wasn't anything particularly amazing.

7 - I recognize it as good but didn't think much of it/didn't really resonate with me. Most likely the show or movie with this rating is just fun or entertaining and not much else; OR it had a lot of things going for it in terms of plot, characters, writing, style, etc. but was weak in execution.

6 - Somewhat entertaining but definitely has unignorable problems/lacking in content in my eyes; OR I'm not fond of certain aspects of it while some other aspects were definitely entertaining in a good way.

5 - Inoffensively bland / boring. Had no thoughts on it; OR it had both good and bad elements that balanced out to give a mediocre experience.

4 - Has some good qualities to it but the bad qualities outweighed the good; OR I slightly dislike it while acknowledging that it has good qualities to it.

3 - It was bad in a way that particularly upset or offended me while not being that bad on an objective level; OR tolerably bad where I'm not getting much entertainment value since it isn't THAT bad but is obviously not good.

2 - I can just barely tolerate watching it, meaning it's quite bad with one or 2 elements that kept my investment whether it be curiosity to see where it goes, to see how bad it could be or investment in the continuation of a pre-existing property or investment in the concept or investment in it's notoriety/impact in the film world, though I definitely do not enjoy watching it; OR it is funny bad, where it is so ridiculously bad that it gets an extra point for at least entertaining me/making me laugh.

1 - Unbearable to watch, meaning it actually offended/upset me without any objective quality about it that could redeem it in any way; OR it was completely uninteresting and boring while also being horrendously bad.
