pitch-black, all consuming, and deeply chilling portrait of a progressively deteriorating mind and a society descending into chaos. As over the top as it may seem, it is chilling in that it is not far off or even implausible. The mental health system is a flawed and sometimes outright dismissive, while class relations get more tense every day. Joker gets all of this right with horrifying accuracy.

not everyone can catch its deeper meaning. it's not for everyone. please, don't expect like the dark knight. that movie was all about what joker can do, and this one is all about how he became joker. i loved the movie and still can not understand why some people hate it. just ignore them, it's worth watching. i wouldn't be surprised if joaquin phoenix gets nominated for best performance by an actor (in a leading role) and win it as well. he deserves it. read more

Joaquin Phoenix's flattered performance is undoubtedly the great charm of the movie. Excessive thinness and tics are astonishing, but there is little else than that. The film pretends to address important issues, such as the invisibility of the unattended, but it is a tangle of brief quotes about social problems to give some gloss to a simplistic plot. The fact that the Joker goes all the way down does not mean that the subject has been dealt with deeply. incredible. i felt a plethora of different emotions watching this. during the first half of the film i found myself practically sympathizing with arthur, putting myself in his shoes and trying to understand how he's feeling. i had high hopes for this one and i can say that i wasn't let down at all. thoroughly enjoyable although less scenes showing joaquin's malnourished torso would've been appreciated lol. it's a tad long but it truly does build up to a very explosive climax in my opinion. this film is not dark phoenix levels of craziness, (no hospitals blowing up, sorry guys). it's a lot read more

joker is a hard movie to compare to other “comic book” films. whereas marvel movies are sometimes criticized for being too comedic, and dc movies for being too serious, they are both basically aiming to entertain. they want to tell a great story and make you fall for the characters first. if the film is about some particular issues, (like the role of government in the winter soldier or personal responsibility in civil war), those issues are a backdrop for the characters, not the main point. joker is different. its better to think of joker as not really a comic book movie, but more of a... read more
