john hillcoat's adaptation of the post-apocalyptic novel by no country for old men author cormac mccarthy had a fair amount of trouble finding a release date or a wide number of theaters from the weinstein company. this is unfortunate but somewhat understandable, as the road is a brutal, unrelenting and top notch film. viggo mortenson and kodi smit-mcphee are exceptional as a man and his son wandering through a barren world after a global disaster, where food is nearly impossible to find and much of mankind has taken to cannibalism in order to survive. the script by joe penhall is very faithful to the book; it omits a few parts but this is probably for the best as it would have made the film even harsher than it already is. charlize theron is good in flashbacks as the man's wife, and garret dillahunt, robert duvall, michael k. williams and guy pearce all bring their a-games for their brief roles. the film is not a perfect one; it is solemn to a fault and it does drag in parts; in addition, the flashbacks are well-done but they seem more a distraction than an integral part of the story. but the film challenges the audience to accept a film that is not part of the standard hollywood movie with jokes and humor throughout. this isn't a journey about where the main characters are going or what will happen once they get there, but what it takes for them to make that journey and what a father will to help his son survive. the cinematography by javier aguirresarobe is beautiful and haunting, which perfectly matches the tone of the film. for fans of harrowing drama and post-apocalyptic films alike, this is a must-see movie.
