i like modern soderbergh a lot. i know not everyone does but logan lucky, mosaic, and unsane have all hit it out of the park for me. high flying bird however missed the mark.
the overall tone felt drab and lazy despite its snappy script. the performances were fine except for maybe gregg who felt like he just read the material right before soderbergh yelled action. holland was fantastic and charismatic but the problem is that you never felt like he was out of control of the situation. by the time you get to the final scene and quinto has his realisation that holland was behind the whole endeavor the audience sees quinto as an idiot. did anyone really believe that this agent was going to create a new industry? since this notion was ridiculous from the word go, there was no drama as the movie went forward. also, while i always enjoy beetz, i couldnt help but think there was no actual point to her character. the plot would be exactly the same if she was removed from the story except for maybe one or two expostional scenes to give another character the chance to monologue.
this was shot in three weeks with soderbergh finishing the rough cut three hours after principal photography wrapped and it shows. as someone who shoots on the iphone professionally, unsane was fascinating and i loved that soderbergh was going to continue that experiment. unsane gave a style and shot selection that warranted the iphone and gave a sense of uneasiness that lent itself to the story. this however was shot so standardly (and expertly) that there were times i forgot a smartphone was used. this was not always the case of course. sometimes it reared its ugly head with the lens built in stabilization fighting the gimbal as well as certain color clipping that is unique to the sensor. even if soderbergh wanted to stay “indie” then he could have used a mirroless dslr or a slim blackmagic to get those tight angles while maintaining quality. im getting into the weeds now, but i should not be forced to think this while watching. he upped his game on how he used the iphone but by doing that he proved he didnt need to.
im not a basketball fan but i did work in football during a lockout and thought this would be interesting enough to watch and be relatable. for lack of a better term, this was too “inside baseball” with people continually talking about doing things instead of actually doing them. having conversations about other conversations that we continually never saw. moneyball made the mundane interesting and gave it heart. high flying bird never left the ground.
