Review of Orphan

jaume collet-serra is a name not many people know but he is quite the accomplished director and more often than not he has made some fine fines, none masterpieces but fine films non the less. he directed the great house of wax remake, three liam neeson action flicks with the best being run all night and most recently the very good shark thriller the shallows. before all of those though (except house of wax) he directed orphan and i always heard good things. it stars a sexy vera farmiga, the always great peter skarsgarrd and it's about an adopted orphan girl who isn't what she seems (i won't say anymore about the plot). i heard great things and you know what, this was great. in typical collet-serra fashion it wasn't brilliant but it sure was a fun ride that got super crazy at the end. it looks really really good, it's very well acted by adults and kids and it is pretty damn creepy. maybe it's a little overlong and maybe it doesn't make full sense (the logic is pretty sound though) but the over length does allow for the film to set up its story and the characters. did i mention that after the long set up it gets balls to the wall crazy? well it does. also, peter skarsgaard is great in this. if you like horror movies then you'll like this one. if you don't like horror movies but like thrillers then you will like this one. if you don't like either, hey, you might still like this one. i'm digging this collet-serra guy. he knows how to put an entertaining and slick film together. he's got a real talent and i'm sure one day he'll make a brilliant masterpiece of a film or at least come damn close. until then he is a director to watch out for. also, peter skarsgaard was great. he should be in more stuff. production design: 8 out of 10 cinematography: 9 out of 10 re-playability: 8 out of 10 originality: 7 out of 10 costumes: 8 out of 10 directing: 8 out of 10 editing: 7 out of 10 acting: 8 out of 10 music: 8 out of 10 script: 7 out of 10 78/100
