A Prophet

it is a good prison movie that does a nice job creating the environment and vibe of prison life. most prison movies are just a way to have the characters develop and evolve in a confined space, but for most of the film i didn't really feel like malik was really growing or changing, he was just becoming more competent. part of that is we have very little insight into who he is when he arrives in prison. we know he isn't a hardened killer, but we know very little beyond that. ultimately he does change and grow as a person, but it is more a sudden switch at the end than a slowly earned read more

honestly expected more based on all the praise i've heard for this. it's a solid crime drama but i wouldn't say this is essential viewing or anywhere close to the 9 and 10 ratings people are giving it. maybe i just didn't have the right mindset while watching this but i didn't really get any of the emotional impact people are describing in their reviews. a prophet isn't good but i wouldn't really recommend it. read more
