i can kinda see what they were trying to say, it just is nothing new. this neutered version of all the king's men features the idealist political ingenue running for the senate and being corrupted by the system a tiny bit. it all felt a bit like redford just wanted to air his political views. we never see bill mckay actually change or compromise, he just learns to talk in more vague terms and be a politician. this film tells us that being a politician is bad (no shit), but it refuses to ever have mckay be bad even though the entire point of the film is him compromising himself to become a read
