hoop-tober 2.0: film 16
***********************************************************************
this would appear to be george a. romero's last film that wasn't a horror. i didn't really know what i was getting into when it started as i had no idea of the plot or even a small snippet of what it was about. all i knew was knight's on motorcycles.
so as i watched i can't say i wasn't engaged in the story and i can't say it's a bad movie because it's not. in fact the direction is pretty solid, the look is pretty solid and the acting is pretty solid. filled with familiar faces from both romero's films and not, the cast shines especially ed harris who delivers a knockout performance.
i can say however that the film, while very well made, and being rather unique, never quite gelled with me and i never fully liked it. you see it's about a group of people in modern day who have rejected society and live life like it's the days of knights and kings. the one difference, motorcycles instead of horses.
now try as i might, i could not get passed the silliness of the concept which in the end kept taking me out of the film. and try as he might, romero doesn't quite sell it. sure he does a great job directing and pretty good job writing and yeah, he sure makes this group of society outcasts feel very very real but i just couldn't get past the ultimate idea which to me seemed a bit hokey.
everyone does a great job making it feel real, behind the camera and in front but due to the inherent fact that this is a cheesy idea it never really worked for me. i enjoyed it to a certain extent but i'd never watch it again and i don't think the replay value is very high. still it's not a bad movie per se but i was expecting better.
it's kind of like easy rider with knights.
