this is the best roger corman film i have seen, which granted isn't a terribly high bar to clear. it is efficient at creating the creepy house, ancient curse vibe without getting too silly. the third act with the dream sequence gets a little off the rails, but overall it works well. there is one thing that was really holding this back, mark damon's performance. he is really pretty bad in this and i am shocked he won the golden globe for most promising newcomer (granted there were 3 winners, but he still won over robert vaughn in the magnificent seven). he would go on to be a successful read

my first corman/poe/price feature and it ended being a most subversive experience. usually you're so occupied with trying to piece together a mystery while more often than not that ends up ruining the experience or at the very least a distraction. think about shit (that's right, shit) like the usual suspects and how that's a pretty underwhelming heist movie when you take the entire keyser söze reveal out of the equation. house of usher never bothers with red herrings, solely keeping the focus on the how of things and it's all the better for it. i watched this on a brewing pre-summer... read
