this book was given to me without much thinking by my father when i was a teenager, and affected me in ways i can only guess at. it's the true story of a suburban american guy who grows up fascinated with "the far east", watching badly-dubbed kung fu films, taking lessons in wushu, and eventually studying mandarin and flying off to teach english in china. for my dad, salzman was a compelling public speaker whose lecture he happened to attend, and whose book he picked up at the table by the auditorium exit. for me, salzman was an inspiration. i shared some of salzman's same background but read more
