as spoof films go, stan helsing could be worse. it's certainly far better than meet the spartans, epic movie and the rest of the jason friedberg/aaron seltzer parody films. unfortunately there is a wide gulf between those films and a good spoof and this take-off on horror movies doesn't make it to the other side of that chasm. the film has some fun silly moments and a few good sight gags; the plot is more coherent than your average parody film from the last several years as well. but writer/director bo zenga doesn't have any idea how to finish his film and he lets it drag on for far too long with far too many extraneous and unfunny side jokes.
the cast is adequate for what is needed; diora baird and desi lydic are pleasing to the eye as the two girls and keenan thompson plays the sidekick as well as is required, though steve howey is rather blasé as the reluctant hero. the biggest problem is that the horror genre is entirely played out in terms of parody and zenga isn't able to bring anything new to the table. a lot of the jokes he provides are well-worn ones for the genre, like a freddy krueger with attachments on his glove, pinhead with a goofy variation on his look and dracula's brides being sexed-up temptresses. zenga's version of balancing things out is to pile on the bodily fluid humor which wears incredibly thin after about fifteen minutes. the bizarre karaoke finale shows how bereft of ideas zenga is, followed up by a lame ending that puts the final nail in this dog of a horror-comedy's coffin.
