i spit on your grave revels in how vile and despicable it can be in the first half. and then, pretends to don a feminist turn to make up for how vile it is. but, honestly, the rest of the film continues to be just as vile, mean, and misogynistic. and, while it proceeds to do this, it forgets to bring any thrills that could come along with revenge or really anything redeeming or new to this type of genre.
the vile and misogynistic nature of this film remains a big roadblock for me with this film. it really doesn't allow me to enjoy anything going on and the revelry that it takes on that kind of makes me sick. i think part of what added to it with this film, as compared to other films, is the fact that it tried to justify the 40 minute rape scene with a faux feminist redemption ending that ends up objectifying and taking advantage of the male gaze even more. it couldn't even live up to the misogynistic core that it has. it's as if the filmmakers knew that there was nothing enjoyable or really redeemable about this film and tried to justify it by shoehorning in a feminist thematic thread, despite the fact that they clearly don't know what that would even look like in a film.
even if you get past that though, there is essentially nothing there except for a brutal rape scene and some kill scenes around it. there really isn't any story or any thrills or enjoyment or character development or skillful manipulation to latch on to with this film. i can understand some of the appeal when it comes to other types of exploitation films and i can find something to latch on to in situations where i feel like the film crossed the line into a little too morally reprehensible. but, with this film, just poorly done brutality and a weak justification for further objectifying women and taking advantage of their vulnerable position within society.
i always wondered how a film like this would be received if it objectified men in the same way that this film objectifies women. i think that might say something about our society, good or bad.
