i mentioned in my review for vacation that i had never seen nor heard of club paradise, a movie starring robin williams, peter o'toole and rick moranis and directed by harold ramis. i only discovered it when i started my harold ramis collection.
i buy a lot of dvd's and blu's and when i own five films by a director (it used to be three, them four and now...) i must own them all. i must! it's an obsession and sometimes it comes at a great cost (i'm looking at you stuart saves his family).
there is good reason i haven't seen or heard about this film. it's pretty terrible. rick moranis was alright to some extent and i guess so was eugene levey, in parts, but otherwise this was a pretty dismal affair. even worse is that it pretty much stars the sctv cast minus john candy and none of them are funny.
i also mentioned in vacation's review that ramis had a sharp eye for comedy. well not here. from what i have seen of his work i am convinced that he must of been going through something rough when he made this. it's just not funny; pretty much every single joke falls flat.
the cast is either really over the top or they are just mugging for the camera. williams and o'toole try deliver performances but the production values are so poor, the script so flaccid, the editing so generic, the music just passable and the humour non existent, that they come off as dull and boring.
i had no interest in this film pretty much from it's hackneyed beginning and it only got worse. a man leaves his life to live in paradise and ends up running a hotel in the middle of a revolution. or something like that? it wasn't really clear what was going and i didn't really care. nothing develops in this film it just happens.
i thought i saw signs of improvement in ramis's directing skills from his first film to his second. here it seems like he didn't learn a thing and actually regressed as a filmmaker. i'm not sure what any of the talent in front of and behind the camera thought they were making. i'm convinced ramis must of been sick, or going through something.
maybe they all landed in jamaica to film, ate a welcome to jamaica meal and got food poisoning that lasted the entire shoot? how else do you explain williams, o'toole, sctv, ramis, all failing so bad? i shouldn't, couldn't and wouldn't recommend this even to my worst enemy.
