i will give de palma credit, he went for it. the problem is, i have no idea what it is. phantom of the paradise is a bombastic production with crazy costumes, elaborate camerawork, and big musical numbers. i just don't know what it was trying to do beyond just push the limits a bit. maybe phantom walked so that rocky horror could run? i'm just not convinced they are going in the right direction. read more

do musicals get much better than phantom of the paradise? does brian de palma ever make a film like phantom of the paradise again? do i think brian de palma has ever made a better film? the answers, receptively, are no, no and most probably not. this film is de palma through and through. it takes what he is known for and what he is best at and delivers on every single level. in this movie you have a familiar story (phantom of the opera) all twisted up, you have a split screen sequence (one of the best), you have de palma staple william findley, you have dark and twisted, you have a fantastic... read more

52 years 52 weeks 52 arrows 1974 watched on arrow video blu-ray. i really dislike musicals, but this one was super watchable. maybe it was the campiness, or maybe it's because i'm a depalma stan, but this one worked. also "faust" is a really good song. william finley is great as usual, and i thank this movie for introducing the film world to jessica harper. read more
