film #7 of hooptober part v: a new beginningslumber party massacre is an interesting thought experiment brought to life: what would a horror comedy be like if it were filmed in a dead serious manner? that's exactly what happened with amy holden jones' movie of an escaped maniac slashing his way through a high school slumber party. rita mae brown's screenplay was done as a parody of the slasher genre, but producers decided it would work better as a serious attempt at a slasher film. they weren't correct, although that's not to say that this is a waste of time by any measure. the humor of brown's script does shine through, despite tweaks to the script by jones. and those elements are helped along by a cast who hold their own effectively enough, with michael villella being a particular standout as the murderous russ thorn.
there is a lot of this film that suffers by the poor match of tone to script, to be fair. several short swaths of the film are downright dull, and it leans so heavily into slasher tropes that filming them in a serious tone doesn't always work. the low-budget nature isn't always a blessing, either. some of the poor lighting plays to the detriment of the project. all in all, this is a perfectly watchable slasher film, which is perhaps more interesting in its conception than its execution.
