film #14 of hoop-tober 2.0
mario bava's black sunday lies in the perfect intersection between the classic horror films of the 1930s & '40s and the new era of horror that was about to follow. the mix of sumptuous black and white cinematography and gothic atmosphere with graphic effects and sexuality in this story about an evil witch risen from the dead hits on just about every level. barbara steele makes a classic scream queen, while bava's direction and cinematography are stylish and arresting.
of course, the film is incredibly tame and archaic compared to the horror of today's era. but there's a storytelling and mood here that is so often missing from even some the better horror stories of last few decades. the opening scene, which involves the gruesome execution of steele's asa the witch, is the stuff of legend. fans who prefer modern horror may be bored or find it all so hokey, but there's greatness here.
