film #14 of hooptober part v: a new beginning a movie about the winged avatar of a hungry aztec god chowing down on new york city residents needs to be knowingly ridiculous. q (or q: the winged serpent if you prefer) is exactly that. larry cohen delivers nicely enough here, centering his film around the inspired, madcap performance by michael moriarty as a criminal who stumbles his way into quetzalcoatl's lair and decides he can make a quick buck from the city over it. moriarty is all nerves and frenetic energy here in a performance that knows exactly what film it is taking place in, adding a... read more

i don't know what it is that made this so watchable. it's cheap, sloppy, and rather underwhelming. but the movie doesn't seem to care about any of that, simply revelling in its general off-kilterness. plus it has michael moriarty showing his range once again. "you dragged me all the way up here, so i can watch you do push-ups." read more
