i feel that it's important for me to point out, i watched this on vhs, on a tv that has wood paneling. afterwards, i played sonic the hedgehog on my sega genesis. that's the kind of movie steel dawn is. it's the kind of movie that merits a downgrade instead of an upgrade. it's an old road warrior rip off, right down to the core.
there's an endearing charm to it, as it recklessly tosses around dystopian and post apocalyptic tropes, trying to fashion its own cinematic world out of leftovers. one man's derivative is another man's charming. swayze still looks good in a fight, and there's plenty of fighting in steel dawn.
brion james has a supporting role in here- as a good guy even. arnold vosloo, and anthony zerbe also show up; rounding out a surprisingly fun cast. all in all, steel dawn is only as entertaining as it is watchable, and it's only as good as far as it isn't outright bad. there's some sword fighting, lots of fist fights, and plenty of macho posturing.
it's a fairly bad movie, but it takes me back to a very pleasant time in my life when silly movies like this were the height of friday evening entertainment for me. so, let me put it to you like this, it's probably the best 80's, post-apocalyptic western, starring patrick swayze that ever existed.
