film #13 of hooptober 3.0: the quickeningbasket case is exactly the kind of bizarre, goofy horror that exemplifies the vhs horror rental favorites of the 1980s. this twisted, decidedly low-rent tale of a brother and his separated siamese twin who seek revenge on the doctors who split them apart is lurid trash in the best way, with a weird sense of humor and effects that are cheap and spectacular all at the same time. frank henenlotter made his directorial debut with this flick and really shines behind the camera, making the most of his shoestring budget for some fairly effective gore moments and capturing the deformed belial in a way that is ridiculous but still manages to work somehow.
the acting is pretty gawkish across the board and the love interests elements of the story don't quite work, culminating in an absurdly comical moment that you won't easily get out of your head involving belial and the object of "normal" twin duane's affections. but somehow the relationship between duane and belial works. this is so not a film for everyone, but if you can appreciate a certain level of sick humor and like the kind of off-beat horror efforts that filled shelves in the days of vhs rental stores, you'll very likely enjoy this.
