Prick Up Your Ears

can't say i was overly taken with this highly praised late 80s biopic. though the script was solid and littered with many great one-liners, the direction and staging failed to deliver convincing dramatic tension for me. although molina and oldman were respectively occasionally compelling in their hammy roles, i didn't buy their supposed fatal chemistry for a second. as pauline kael once put it "the film is honest and watchable. but, unlike orton, it takes no real delight in misbehaving." i could tell watching the film that it must have been tremendously risqué in its day but by today's read more
