Review of Airport 1975

having only ever seen the last three airport movies on tv i has always thought that airport '79 (the last one) was this one. i'm not sure why really... actually i know why. because this one sucked; even at such a young age i knew it sucked and barely anything sucked at that time. all these years later my sour memories of this film have made me think it must of been the last in the series because it was just so bad. it isn't though, it's only the second one and now for the life of me i don't have a clue as to what the last one is. anyways, this film still sucks. i just watched it again on dvd and i thought prior to watching it that maybe it wouldn't be that bad this time out. maybe in it's full widescreen glory the film wouldn't look so bad with some of the worst blue screen effects i have ever seen. so i watched it and... i was hopeful but no dice. it still has the worst blue screen effects, like seriously bad. it has no real effects otherwise as the film feels cheap. the plane collision was just so badly done. it was awful. i will give you the costumes are really well done, the pilots make up was well done and the airplane set itself was well done but everything else was cheap and poorly done. then there is the acting. man some of this was tough. the first film was filled with great performances and great dialogue and was so much fun to watch as the tension built to a crescendo but this one here was a slog. no great dialogue, not a single great performance, many performances that are cheesy, many performances that are stiff and wooden and many performances that just feel dated. chuck heston has to be the most dated action hero ever (at least he feels like it in this film). and karen black has given a few good performances in her life but most of the stuff i have seen her do is terrible. here she is somewhere in the middle, bland wooden mostly but sometimes she has a moment and then she also makes some weird ass faces in this film. she is nice to look at though (when she isn't making those faces). the first film was well put together and told a variety of stories over just two hours. it fleshed out characters and it told a cohesive and strong story. it was called airport and it was about an airport and one plane in the air that was in trouble and one plane on the ground that was causing more trouble. it was a movie about an airport more or less. this one is called airport '75 and it has a bunch of famous faces and tells no stories and build no characters what so ever. everyone is here to sport their famous mug and do nothing else. airport '75 is also not about an airport, it is about one plane and one plane only. this is an in name only sequel that squanders that name. with no characters to care about, no plot lines to keep the movie interesting and no good special effects to keep you entertained or distracted airport '75 ends up being a boring slog and ill conceived mess. it makes me not want to watch the rest of this series and i have fond memories of '77. production design: 4 out of 10 cinematography: 5 out of 10 re-playability: 3 out of 10 originality: 5 out of 10 costumes: 7 out of 10 directing: 5 out of 10 editing: 5 out of 10 acting: 5 out of 10 music: 6 out of 10 script: 5 out of 10 50/100
