film #12 of hooptober part vii: the new blood while i'm undoubtedly a fan of david cronenberg, there are a few notable gaps in my familiarity with his resume -- notably, his pre-1980s films. the brood is the first of those i've seen and while it doesn't sit at the pinnacle of his work for me, it's very solid. it's clear that at this point, cronenberg hadn't yet fully codified certain elements of his style but he remains an undeniable master at translating his personal experiences into a wicked, biting genre effort. inspired by his painful divorce, cronenberg creates a film that certainly lags... read

extremely seasonally appropriate in texture and the way family trauma festers until it physically erupts during the "airing of grievances" and "feats of strength." i don't know anyone who shoots temperature as well as cronenberg. every interior shot populated with people in woollen sweaters, escaping the icy cold winter in their carpeted, hardwood coffins. while the entire time your eyes are being drawn to those tiny neon jumpsuits like some sort of color-coded foreshadowing. man, there's nothing like early cronenberg. read

hooptober 5 #23 watched on criterion collection blu-ray. got out of the gym, had a great workout, now i feel like i should be rewarded. 😃 let's watch one of my batch of blu-rays i haven't watched for hooptober yet! 👻🎃 ok, the brood starts off great with oliver reed, and he's awesome throughout, but afterwards it starts slowing down. slow burner of a movie with a weird creature killing people. 🙂 the third act starts...😶 and keeps going.😐 and...😨🤢🤮 ay dios mios what the fuck. what a crazy and disturbing third act. and those scary kids in the snowsuits remind me of the first time i watched the... read

I don't know what I was expecting out of this film honestly. Not even in a bad way, I just didn't know what to expect. It was very odd, and obscure. But it was still pretty entertaining. It took this whole weird turn and honestly I'm not all too surprised, since it is a David Cronenberg film. But it was just really interesting. The scene with Nola and her exposed womb was bizarre as all hell, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I literally found myself saying wtf aloud. A really cool film! read

An experimental psychotherapy yields ghastly results when the patients' neurosis and aggressive instincts become incarnate. Almost 4 decades haven't diluted the unsettling effect of this strikingly original shocker: as cold and detached in his narration as if presenting a scientific essay, Cronenberg makes his intellectual vision alive with deeply disturbing imagery. read

Didn't really grab me until the last ~15 minutes, but oh my what a closing sequence. Shocking and tense and totally fucked up in all the ways I want when I put a Cronenberg movie on. Nonetheless I still never really cared for the half baked marriage-under-strain social drama that ran throughout the film. read
