part of my director's fortnight project #1the tree of wooden clogs feels very much like a documentary. in fact, it probably is the closest thing you will get to a documentary without actually being a documentary. ermanno olmi utilizes non-actors to tell the story of what the experience of these lower class families are from day to day.
olmi strives to do so in such a direct and objective manner in this film. the result of this is an experience that very naturally captures what it means to live in the situation that these people live in day after day and year after year. without the swelling string music and some of the directorial flourishes, this film would be the same as a person with a camera following around these farmers and their children as they go on living their lives. that is a very commendable result and it is very admirable how olmi was able to pull this off.
personally, i had a hard time connecting to this film. while there are some spectacular sequences that are fascinating to watch unfold, the lack of a narrative pull failed to compel me through some of the slower parts of the film. perhaps if the film were a little shorter it would not require that extra push from a compelling narrative to work on most levels for me. but it felt as sometimes the film was dragging through what is a longer run time unnecessarily.
