this film was effectively hitchcocks test run for north by northwest. the general plot and feel are very similar to north by northwest, but it isnt as polished or ultimately as satisfying. it is a fairly generic, but entertaining everyman spy thriller that has a strong hitchcock feel. robert cummings is fine as the lead as is priscilla lane. if you like hitchcock, it is a fine hitchcock, but it isnt exceptional like some of his other work. watched as part of scavenger hunt 45 task #26: watch a film about character/s on the run my list | kenzie's master list read more

alfred hitchcock collection #1 “kaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnneeeeeeeeee” my earliest hitchcock viewing so far. the first 15 and last 15 minutes are so strong; i loved the shots of the arson of the factory, the theater shootout, and the statue of liberty scene. while the bookends of the movie are very strong, the rest of the movie is lacking and i lost interest at a point. very good black & white photography. i have to say universal did a great job for the transfer onto blu-ray. read more

saboteur came out in the middle of a 6-year period where hitchcock was producing films at a furious rate, including rebecca, foreign correspondent, mr. & mrs. smith, suspicion, shadow of a doubt, lifeboat, spellbound, and notorious. they were all well-received, but i like saboteur better than all of them! saboteur on the surface of things is not as impressive as several of the others. it was hitch's first picture for universal, and he was stuck using their contract players (due to the old studio system) rather than being able to sign who he wanted, reportedly gary cooper and barbara stanwyck.... read more
