hopscotch is a thriller without thrills that somehow ends up being a pleasant film that insists on being mediocre at every single turn. there isn't anything aggressively bad about the film but there isn't anything that is particularly good either. it takes the wit of james bond and implants it with a main character who can't do the physical stunts anymore and infuses the story with the same goofy charm that pervades comedies such as the odd couple and grumpy old men
so, it only makes sense that walter matthau would star in this film and can be found doing his matthau thing. of course, he isn't bad and turns in a pretty fine performance here. he has a certain way of delivering dialogue that works very well in this film. he has a talent for delivering one liners that really stands out in films like this. he works very well within the context of this film. matthau would have been able to carry this film were it a shorter film. however, the run time combined with the stuff going on around him make this film just around average.
the stuff around him is just meh, though. it doesn't go out on a limb or really take any chances narratively. we follow matthau around as he tries to evade the intelligence agencies of the world, all while writing a tell all memoir of his time as a spy. nothing really sets this apart from any of the other lighter spy thriller/comedies that we have seen so many times.
