- more appropriately titled: when do we laugh?
- but, seriously, this film will have you asking if certain actions were "supposed" to be funny. one of the major problems with this film is that it isn't able to pull off any great jokes or make the audience chuckle enough to be a passable comedy. as it turns out, throwing many unfunny jokes at the audience makes the film seem like its working too hard.
- the characters in this film have no depth. each character is assigned a stereotype and, save for one or two characters, they simply exist to fulfill that stereotype. the jewish grandfather is there to remind everyone of how things have changed. the sex therapist there to milk the inuenndos and sex jokes. the religious character to juxtapose modern living with religious ideals. these characters are exactly what you expect them to be at the surface and aren't developed any deeper than that.
- unfortunately, that is this films downfall. a dysfunctional family comedy like this requires the comedy and conflict created by the dysfunction to mean something or to be connected with character beats to make the film resonant. since these characters are not developed well, the drama and tension can't carry this film any more than the poor jokes.
- whoever created this poster looked at the home alone poster too much.
