firth & bening have never put up better performances. this rendition of les liasons dangereuses is the best i've seen so far, despite balking at balk's ditziness. one genuinely feels sorry for the titular protagonist in the end, lucky as he was (& often got) read more

i was expecting an amazing movie with valmont. after all it's cast is amazing, it's director is one of the greats and it would probably be filled with sex, nudity and deplorable characters. maybe this kind of film just isn't for me but i wasn't that entertained, in fact i was almost bored, almost. i take that back, i have seen films in this 'genre' that i love. i just think this one was a little too off. why was it off? well it was a little hard to follow at times (i admit my new cat was all over me while i watched it). it didn't have anywhere near the amount of nudity or sex it needed to read more

In pre-Revolutionary France, a couple of scheming aristocrats bet on their respective abilities to manipulate their peers and spread their ruthless libertinism. Inspired by Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 epistolary novel "Les liaisons dangereuses" (and released just a year after the film "Dangerous Liaisons", an adaptation of Christopher Hampton's 1985 play based on the same novel), "Valmont" marks the final collaboration between director Forman and cinematographer Miroslav Ondrícek and its lavish reconstruction of the late 1700s era is a sheer pleasure for the eyes.
