fear x has always been considered the black sheep of refn's early filmography and i've always been the first to jump to its defense.
but it's been at least 5 years since i last watched it so i figured i should give this a rewatch and make sure my defending of fear x is actually justified.
so i dug around that one box full of dvds from my teenage years where none of them have cases and half of them probably don't work anymore and fished out fear x.
so how did that turn out?
since my last viewing of this (whenever that might have actually been) i have watched memento, and the comparison between the two really can't be avoided:
they're both thrillers about a guy discovering details of his wife's murder, but only one of them is engaging and cleverly written. the other one is told in reverse.
i really enjoyed how fear x was built more around immersing you in its melancholy tone rather than conveying a narrative. everything seems geared around that mood but the audio stands out the most; it's very quiet and i think you could get nearly the same experience if the dialogue track was cut entirely.
that's not to say the dialogues are bad or anything. i don't know how to explain this properly. i think it's something you have to experience yourself.
the film is very patiently paced, almost plodding but because of how well it managed to draw me into its atmosphere i definitely wouldn't say boring.
so yeah, fear x is still great.
