3/5 Lt Ro finds herself having to choose between performing her duty, in order to obey the orders that were given to her and thus have the Federation honor the treaty with the Cardassians, or follow her heart in what she believes is doing the right thing. But not only that, she also finds herself torn between choosing one father figure and casting out the other. One has believed in her and given her the opportunity to change her life and grow. The other reminds her of her real father and touches her heart. On one side of the scale there is respect, admiration, loyalty, duty. On the other there is the weight of nurture and the feeling of righteous. Another aspect, which had already been shown in previous episodes, is showing the price that needs to be paid for a peace treaty, it's unfair but that is the sacrifice that needs to be made.
It was a good episode but the way it ended and that last conversation between Riker and Picard felt short. Another fault was the lack of an exchange between Picard and Ro about his time as prisoner and being tortured. That should have been used to persuade her, successfully or not.
RO: Captain, I want you to know that I really appreciate your recommending me. If it weren't for you, my life would be a very different one right now.
RO: When you sent me on this mission, I thought that I could do it. Even though it meant helping Cardassians, even though it meant betraying people who are fighting against them. Now I'm not sure where I stand. PICARD: Are you saying you want to back out of this mission? RO: Sir, I don't want to let you down, I swear that I don't. PICARD: This has nothing to do with me. This is about you. If you back out now, you'll throw away everything you've worked for. We're committed to this mission. My only question for you is, can you carry out your orders? I could put you before a board of inquiry for having lied to me about this operation. I would certainly have you court-martialled if you sabotage it. Now, it's your decision. RO: I'll carry out my orders, sir.
RO: It's been a long time since I really felt like I really belonged somewhere. Could you tell Captain Picard something for me? RIKER: Of course. What is it? RO: Tell him I'm sorry. ... [Ready room] RIKER: She seemed very sure that she was making the right choice. I think her only real regret was that she let you down. Here's my report. (Picard doesn't move to take the PADD, so Riker puts it on the desk and leaves)
