A mostly charming retelling of the old legend. I like Merlin. Have so for a long time. But I never got around to finish it until now. Colin Morgan and the rest of the cast do a great job portraying their roles. But the show has a problem with it's more antagonistic characters. They are very set in their evils. Showing rare signs of inner conflict and very sudden turns regarding alignment and motivations. Sometimes to the point of being almost cartoonish. It came close to ruining the entire show for me. Because at times it forced things to go wrong way too easily. Which of course is very frustrating to witness. And it's a problem that tends to get worse with every season.
Spoilers: But the one thing that bothered me even more is how long it took for Merlin to reveal himself to Arthur. I wanted to see Merlin as his true self alongside Arthur. Bringing their wonderful friendship to it's complete conlusion and induldging in it, atleast for more than half an episode. But of course it had to happen only right before Arthurs death...
Yet, despite my negative words and my overall complaints, I'm glad to have made this journey. It is a show that made me smile more often than not. Be it about the friendships between all those figures or just simply the humor that is portrayed wonderfully.
And there was definitely alot of heart put into it overall.
