The dramatic opening scene where 'most-wanted' Raymond Reddington (James Spader) walks into the FBI and demands to see lowly analyst Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) will stick in my mind forever. This sets the tone for the show with the arrogant, ostentatious showman nudging and exploiting the FBI, personified by Keen who is a conscientious, rule-bound idealist.
Spader is a genius, without his character it would have become a mundane 'me-too' procedural, and without Spader's acting chops and charisma it would have been a spineless blancmange. The dynamic between Red and Elizabeth drives the show forward, often leaving other characters in its wake.
Imagine my disappointment then, when Megan Boone decided to leave after season 8. However, it has reinvented itself, remaining a strong show, though not at the previous dizzying heights. Season 9 has some great episodes, but it is clear if Spader is absent or less involved, a void is created that the other actors are unable to fill.
