Episode Summary

In a dilemma of ethics and survival, Voyager's crew discovers an alien robot with a unique power source. Debate ensues over repairing or studying it, leading to B'Elanna Torres successfully reactivating it with adapted warp plasma. The robot, part of a society of mechanical beings whose creators are extinct, abducts B'Elanna to build a prototype for its species. Despite Captain Janeway's ethical concerns about the Prime Directive, B'Elanna is compelled to create a new robot. However, she destroys it upon learning the robots terminated their creators to perpetuate their war. A rescue mission ensues, involving a diversion with another robotic ship, ultimately leading to B'Elanna's conflicted but necessary decision to halt her creation.

Good episode. Entertaining, interesting and even funny.
Creation turns against creator in order to fight for their survival. And then goes wild. The dangers of robotic self awareness.

Captain Janeway: [on seeing two identical space ships crewed by robots fighting each other] Is it possible that we've stumbled into the middle of some kind of... robotic war?

Torres: If both sides were annihilated, then why continue your war?
Automated Personnel Unit 3947: All automated personal units were programmed to achieve victory.
...
Torres: Has anyone in all these years ever tried to stop this war?
APU 3947: The Praelor and the Cravic called a truce.
Torres: Wait a minute, if both sides called a truce then why didn't they stop you from fighting?
APU 3947: They attempted to do so.
Torres: And?
APU 3947: We terminated the Builders.
...
APU 3947: When it was anticipated that the war would end the Builders no longer required our services and they attempted to terminate us. In doing so, they became the enemy. We are programmed to destroy the enemy. It is necessary for our survival. Now that you constructed a prototype we will soon outnumber the Cravic units. We will achieve victory.
...
Torres: The individual energy codes... Is that why the Builders added them? To prevent the procreation of these units? [gasps] My God, what have I done?!

Captain Kathryn Janeway: It must have been difficult.
Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres: Difficult?
Captain Kathryn Janeway: To destroy what you created.
Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres: It was necessary.
